Heavy Vehicle Registration Charges
National rego charges for trucks, prime movers and trailers – 2026–27
Source: National Transport Commission – Registration charges for heavy vehicles
Annual national registration charges for trucks, prime movers and trailers. They've gone up 3% on last year.
What you'll pay
Every state and territory bases its heavy vehicle registration on these national charges, set by the National Transport Commission (NTC). The registration portion of your bill should closely match the figures below. Your state then adds compulsory third party (CTP) insurance and its own administration fees, so your total will be slightly higher. Check your state's road agency for an exact quote. Links for each state are at the bottom of this page.

What the vehicle types mean
- Truck (type 1) is a rigid truck at or under the Mass Rating for Charging (MRC) limit: 12 t for 2 axles, 16.5 t for 3 axles, or 20 t for 4 or more axles.
- Truck (type 2) is a rigid truck over those MRC limits.
- Short combination truck is a truck nominated to tow one trailer, where the combination has no more than 6 axles and a legal maximum total mass of 42.5 t or less.
- Medium combination truck is a truck nominated to tow one trailer that is over either short combination limit: more than 6 axles, or a legal maximum total mass over 42.5 t. This is where the big jump in price happens. For example, a 3-axle truck towing a 4-axle dog has 7 axles, so it's charged as a medium combination truck.
- Long combination truck is a truck nominated to tow 2 or more trailers, such as a truck and two dogs.
- Dog trailers: all the axles count as one group for rego. For example, a dog with a single axle at the front and a tandem at the back is charged as a tri-axle group ($2,403 a year), and a 4-axle dog with tandems front and rear is charged as a quad group ($3,188 a year).
- For the full legal definitions, see the Heavy Vehicle Charges Model Law.
Same rego, more payload
PBS approval and Higher Mass Limits (HML) can both let your truck and trailer carry a bigger payload on approved roads. Ask us what yours could get.
