Fatigue Management

Fatigued drivers = Safety hazard

Driver fatigue is a silent killer on our roads. It can significantly impair judgment, reaction time, and overall driving ability, leading to potentially catastrophic accidents. For heavy vehicle operators, ensuring drivers are well-rested and alert is not just a moral responsibility; it’s a legal requirement under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

Here at Tri Axle Group, we understand the importance of effective fatigue management for your business. We offer comprehensive solutions to help you comply with regulations and, more importantly, keep your drivers and everyone on the road safe.

What are my legal obligations?

Drivers in the heavy vehicle transport industry who are affected by fatigue present a safety risk to themselves and to the public. Under the HVNL section 26C, each party in the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) has the responsibility to fulfill their safety duty obligations. Under the HVNL section 26D, executives of a businesses must exercise due diligence to ensure their business complies with its primary duty.

The Dangers of Driver Fatigue

Driver fatigue can manifest in various ways, often with subtle signs that can escalate quickly. These include:

  • Drowsiness and Microsleeps: Reduced alertness can lead to unintentional lapses in consciousness, even for a few seconds, which can be disastrous behind the wheel of a heavy vehicle.
  • Impaired Decision Making: Fatigue can cloud judgment, making it difficult for drivers to assess situations accurately and react appropriately to hazards.
  • Reduced Reaction Time: Fatigue slows down reaction speeds, increasing the risk of accidents due to delayed responses.
  • Loss of Focus: Tiredness can make it hard to concentrate, leading to missed signals, traffic violations, and potential collisions.

The Cost of Fatigue

The consequences of driver fatigue are far-reaching:

  • Accidents: Fatigue-related accidents can cause severe injuries, fatalities, and immense property damage.
  • Loss of Productivity: Driver fatigue can lead to delays, missed deliveries, and disruptions to your operations.
