The Australian Design Rules and Heavy Vehicle National Law govern the size and mass of heavy vehicle combinations permitted on Australian roads.
They are prescriptive, out-of-date and limit what heavy vehicles can carry – whether that’s by volume or by mass limitations on bridges.
PBS was incorporated into the law, to recognise that times have changed and we can now simulate vehicles and determine if they’re safer and more productive. Instead of fixed size and mass restrictions, PBS assesses your vehicle combination against 16 performance-based safety and infrastructure standards.
This opens the door to optimized designs and for existing vehicles to be assessed and certified. Through certification, you can unlock your fleet’s performance and productivity, all while ensuring the highest safety standards remain in place.

- 20m Semi-trailers gaining general access.
- Spread axle trailer combinations achieving higher GCM with lower tare masses.
